What Is Medical Identity Theft?

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008 by <ADMINNICENAME>

When you are talking about identity theft it means someone is stealing from you; more accurately, it means that someone is trying to make use of your personal information to get some or other amount of money, which would be your responsibility to repay. This is easy to understand. However, what is medical identity theft?

The Medical Identity Theft Explained

When someone commits medical identity theft he or she would be using your medical records and your medical insurance for their own benefit. Most of the times you would learn about the medical identity theft committed against you only when you would be in need of medical attention and when ironically you would have trouble getting.

This is how the thief does it. He or she uses your identity to receive treatment and the insurance company pays for it. The next time you need treatment you would find out that the funds are not covering your bills because of the previous treatment you availed. Unfortunately you would have no recollection of that “previous” treatment because the person treated was not you.

The Dangers Of Medical Identity Theft

When medical identity theft is committed you do not risk only the charges of fraud with the insurance company or loss of finances, but also the possibility of suffering from life threatening complications in the wake of the “previous” treatment. It is possible that your medical records now consists of a lot of information that is no longer applicable to you such as allergies, special medication, surgery requirement, etc. which would be extremely difficult to fight.

Some dangerous scenarios would be having the wrong blood group entered based on which information you could be given the wrong type blood causing serious complication and even death. You might have in your records that you were a substance abuser when you would have not even touched a cigarette in you whole life. In this case you might even risk arrest on the charges of possession of illegal drugs and you would not be able to prove that it was not you when the treatment was done last time.

You might be recorded as HIV positive or even having AIDS which could turn your life topsy turvy until you realize where the problem lies.

It is difficult to prevent such theft, but not impossible. Ensure that you check all your emails and mails regarding insurance and credit card bills. If you find the slightest discrepancy immediately try to find the reasons behind it. If there is any collection call addressed to you, though you have no knowledge of having taken any loan, immediately track the source down.

Always be careful and alert and you would be able to prevent and minimize the danger of any type of identity theft.

Identity Theft Solution Services

Saturday, January 12th, 2008 by <ADMINNICENAME>

Unfortunately, from the beginning of time, stealing has been a major issue for most civilized and non-civilized societies. Stealing can be basically defined as wanting what other people have and taking that item without permission. Sometimes that stealing of property or possessions from others can be done through brutal methods or today accomplished through electronic means to steal a person’s identity.

Identity theft is a type of crime in which a person’s good name is taken and assumed by another individual. This type of robbery not only steals the person’s identity, but allows them to access current financial and personal records as well as opening new accounts under that assumed person’s name.

Identity theft has become rampant and continues to escalate to epidemic proportions. Therefore, it is important to take advantage of an identity theft solution to protect one’s identity. To do so, it is important to understand what an identity theft solution service is and what are some of the services provided that offer protection against identity theft.

What Is An Identity Theft Solution?

Identity theft solution can be as basic as taking simple precautions that prevent sensitive personal information from falling into the hands of others. Therefore, a simple identity theft solution can be the securing of Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, secret codes, etc. The plan for securing this information is to make sure that none of these items or numbers are carried with you, but are placed in a secured area within the home.

Another identity theft solution would be enrolling in a membership service that oversees the credit activity within the individual’s account on a daily basis. Generally this identity theft solution works in concert with the three major credit reporting companies.

It simply means that when there is activity surrounding the use of your credit cards or inquiries of your credit, the identity theft solution service will be notified as well. They in turn will notify their member and the customer can then determine whether the inquiry is legitimate or fraudulent. Some of this fraudulent or suspicious activity could include a possible request for a change in address, inquiries regarding your credit history, correspondence with various credit card companies that may include a request for a credit line increase, new accounts activated, etc.

Generally, the identity theft solution service will provide an e-mail notification. This will allow for early detection of any suspicious activity.

What Can Be Expected From Identity Theft Solution Service?

There are a number of services that the theft solution service can provide. One of the major expectations that the customer can receive from this membership service is the availability of qualified customer service representatives. These representatives should be knowledgeable about identity theft and trained so that they can provide the utmost assistance to the customer.

Therefore, these highly trained customer service representatives should not only suggest but take immediate actions to minimize or diffuse fraudulent activity related to identity theft. Also, they should be trained to assure their customers that every action has been taken and that any damage, if at all, will be minimal to the individual.

In addition, to working with the three major credit bureaus, there should be an ability of the identity theft solution service to work in conjunction with various other governmental bureaus associated with the loss of one’s identity. That interaction with other bureaus should include a relationship with the Social Security Administration, law-enforcement agencies and those government departments that deal with public records.
